Clancy's Heritage
Clancy is out of Bonnie and Cailean from Vintage Kennels. Cailean, his sire, is out of AKC lines (he was originally destined for the show ring, but was turned over to the farm instead for having “too much prey drive” – which he has nothing of the sort, he just wanted to work! Cailean is primarily a farm livestock guardian, he snuggles the baby goats and chicks and has (sadly) scarred up his beautiful face once leaping into the air and attacking a red-tailed hawk that was after the chickens.
Bonnie, his dam, was farm bred and imported from Pleasant Bay, New Zealand. She was raised by an old farmer out there named Leonard Thatcher who claimed to have been breeding along the same dam line for 50 years. Her natural ability and instincts makes it a pleasure to work with her. Bonnie is also TDI certified, and has attended therapy sessions. -Natlie H. Ventage Kennels
Clancy is quickly becoming the guardian of the place. He takes his rounds and whenever there is a strange sound or clang he is off to investigate and bark at it. A few days ago in the evening, we were inside watching TV when all of a sudden he started barking. He would look inside and bark again. Then we heard the other dogs go crazy with barking. We decided to check on the commotion. My dad had started a fire in the burning barrel and flames were coming up. Then we realized it had been Clancy warning us of this strange thing that he did not like. We praised him and told him that it was OK since my dad was still out with the fire. We resumed our program. We are so glad he has the intelligence to warn us.
Several times this past spring and summer our cows have gotten into our back yard. This usually happened when I would hook all the dogs up, especially Clancy with the girls. Then it dawned on me, it happens when Clancy is not guarding the back fence that a gate is opened by the cows. He runs back and forth and will bark at the cows. When the cows get close to that gate and try to push against it, it is Clancy that is speedily on the way to bark and push the cows back. We have secured the gate better, but it sure is nice to know that he knows his job.
When the cows did get out, I was impressed with his natural instinct for herding. He naturally joined in with the other dogs. The last time the cows got out, i purposely put Sandy up. Clancy and Heather did a great job as a team to put the cows where they belonged. All I did was direct and call then close the gate. Thankfully the cows rarely get out, but it sure is nice to have help when I need it.
Over all, I am thrilled with Clancy. He is sweet, lovable, a great companion, and a great guard dog. Yet, he has brains to submit to Gabby, our Alpha dog, who mainly watches now and only interferes when he knows he has to. Clancy loves to be inside with us and knows his spot. Outside he stays close to the house and keeps guard.

Clancy has such a great disposition. We all love his gentle way about him. Loves hugs and kisses. He is wonderful about guarding our place and keeping everything in its place. He really enjoys it when he is allowed inside. Loves sitting in “his spot” and looking so Princely Proud. He has become the Alpha dog overseeing everything. Yet, is submissive to Gabby who is 12 yr. old. He is a great stud producing some beautiful pups.

This past spring we bought some new chicks. I am very happy to say that he reacted the way I was hoping. He was curious at first, but he then became protective. When the other dogs wanted to see the chicks and check on them, he did too. He has learned to protect all the chickens and is trusted with them whenever they are out of the chicken tractors.
